The Geography of Kenya

Kenya is a country found in the eastern part of Africa. Her neighbors are Uganda on the west, Sudan and Ethiopia on the north, Somalia on the east and Tanzania on the south.On the coastal side,Kenya enjoys the Indian ocean waters. Kenya has a tropical climate,more savannah-type characterised by vast grasslands and low altitude landscape. The Kenya highlands enjoy moderate to heavy rainful and beautified by tropical rain forests.

The highlands of Kenya provide a rich agricultural climate where tea,coffee and dairy is the main farming practice.

The lowlands provide for subsistence farming where the local populations live by growing crops and keep animals for food.

The semi-arid and arid lands are traversed by cattle herders who keep animals for food.

Kenya's rich diversity

Kenya has a population of about 40m people. Many tribes live in Kenya. Over fifty tribes have been identified. These tribes have their own tribal languages but are all unified by the official languages of swahili and english.

The tribes vary in their economic activities too. Those living in the coastal lowlands are fisherman,subsistence farmers and as one goes up to the central highland we have the cash crop;tea coffee and dairy farmers. In the arid and semi-arid areas we find the animal herders. Near the alkes we find the fishermen.

Kenya was colonized by the Brtish and became independent on 06/01/1963 and a republic ion 12/12/1964, where it became known as the official Republic of Kenya.

The capital city is Nairobi with a population of about 4m.The second largest city is the coastal town of Mombasa.

The country boasts a relativel peaceful coexistence of its population compared to its unstable neighbors who have experienced political instability in their governments; Somalia,Uganda,Sudan,Ethiopia.

The attractions in Kenya

From the coast, enjoy the sunny,blue waters, sandy beaches of the Indian coast found in Kenya. At the beaches enjoy the luxury of the world class beach hotels, water sporting activities, the rich culture of the coastal tribes, the museums, the historical sites, the nature trails and the animal parks. Also do not forget to sample out the rich Mombasa and Malindi nightlife adorned with beautiful women and men.

As you leave the coastal strip on a Safari, you should not miss the savanna lowlands that are home to the amazing wild animals where the King of the Jungle rules. The famous man-eaters of Tsavo found at their hideouts; the Tsavo east and west national parks. Along these savannah type lowlands we find the Amboseli National park.

Towards the city of Nairobi, enjoy the Nairobi National Park. Once in Nairobi, enjoy the city life. Sample out the night life and do not shy off from the mouth watering nyama chomas and ugali, a local delicacy. Nairobi city will remind one of the large metropolis of the world characterised by sky-scrappers, traffic both human and automobiles.

To the west of Nairobi,you will come across the rich cultural people of the Maasai tribe and sorrounding them is the amazing Maasai mara reserve home for the famous wild animal (wildebeast)migration, one of the wonders of the world.

Further west,one cannot miss the beauty of the Great Rift valley which disects Kenya highlands from Lake Turkana in the north to Lake Magadi in the south. The rift valley boasts of diverse ecosystems built around its many lakes; L.Bogoria,L Baringo, L. Nakuru famous for flamingoes and L. Naivasha.

From Nairobi to central Kenya, one will enjoy the beauty of the Kenya highlands. The aberdares is home to the magnificient Aberdare National park and the highest point Kenya is the Mt. Kenya a volcanic mountain which  supports a mountainous ecosystem.

Once on the western part of Kenya, one should not miss the serenity of the large lake Victoria whose waters are shared by the three East African countries; Kenya,Uganda and Tanzania.The lake Victoria is a source of livelihood for many people in Africa.The lake serves as a source of the longest River Nile which empties in the Mediterranean sea via Ethiopia, Sudan and Egypt at the north of Africa. At the lake, enjoy the fresh water fish meals, the lake tours and sports.Visit the lake islands for luxury first class hospitality too.

How to travel to Kenya

The fasest way to travel to Kenya from the USA is by air. A sixteen hour trip can land you in Kenya from the USA. Avoid to many stop-overs. One stop over in Europe is suffIcient to get you onto a connecting flight to Nairobi,Kenya. The Jomo Kenyatta International airport in Nairobi is the hub for air travel in Kenya. Many international flights make it to Nairobi via this airport.

The Kenyan national carrier is Kenya Airways and it flies both domestic and international routes.

Once in Nairobi,one can use air tarvel to the coastal town of Mombasa, a one hour flight or Kisumu in the west, the famous lake Victoria city.

Road travel is vast and fairly developed within Kenya and most  of the Safaris are by road. Private flights are available to ride to  the various attraction sites like the animal parks.
